Spark advancers for Kawasaki electronic ignition
04 Dec 2024 04:26
hi all, question, is there somebody on the forum who has a list of the several types of spark advancers for the old KZ900/1000 models with the kawasaki electronic ignition. Or is there somewere on the internet an adress where i can find a type list. I am asking because i have several types on the shelve and i dont know what is the best to use on my Z1B 1015cc with Kawasaki elektronic ignition. At the moment i use the 1009 type but on the evilbay i see several different types.

My understanding is that the early Z1's used a timing of 5 deg before top dead center at 1,000 rpm to 40 deg before top dead center at 3,000 rpm. In 1974 they changed to 20 deg BTDC but kept 40 deg BTDC to improve low end idle. I have a manual for a '79 KZ1000 that says advance timing was 10 deg BTDC at 1,000 rpm and 40 deg BTDC at 3,400 rpm.
You should be able to measure with a protractor to determine which advance unit you have.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

HRM, I think you meant 40 degrees before TDC for both advancers?

The pins are in a different place on the different models too.

If it's aftermarket such as Dyna 'S' etc you want the 005 advancer which is 20/40 degrees..
The 1009 advancer which is 10/40 degrees is for the factory MK2 etc electronic ignition and if used with a Dyna makes the bottom end a little lumpy due to a different curve caused by stronger springs.
In any application do not use the early Z1 5/40 degree advancer..
Keep the 1009 if you are using the genuine factory ignition for the MK2 retro fitted to an earlier 903cc/1015cc kickstart engine etc..

05 Dec 2024 04:26Oops! You are correct...don't know why I wrote it that way. I've corrected it.HRM, I think you meant 40 degrees before TDC for both advancers?
