My Tachometer Cable broke near the engine.  When I pulled it off(after cooling off of course) I noticed what looks like the residual remains of a rubber seal.  Are these needed to seal the Tach Cable to the engine?  The seal was 45 years old and just fell apart when I removed the cable.  I have sourced a new Tachometer Cable and a Tachometer Cable Rubber Seal/Grommet.  Does anyone know the proper way to install?  My original as mentioned just crumbled.  Is there just one way to install?  I ask only because I am stone reliable for choosing the wrong way.
Seriously, Please assist if you know how the KZ650 rubber seal is to install.

The smaller end of the oil seal w the compression spring should be oriented towards the engine. otherwise road grit & grunge might collect there around the spring for whatever reason.  Here's a diagram drawing that shows the orientation. different motorcycle, same seal:

There's also an orange gasket, still available at the Kawasaki dealer (or partzilla).  When replacing the tachometer cable, my tach gasket crumbled. didn't have a spare, so I installed a fiber washer from the hardware store. I have no idea how good it seals. forgot about it & haven't checked it. doh.  www.partzilla.com/catalog/kawasaki/motor...cylinder-head-covers

Be careful, there are two types of tach drive seals, one with a small end, like a valve stem seal and a later flat one type. Both seals are different oriented towards the engine.

I'm not seeing a second type of seal in any of those topics. doh. At any rate if he gets the correct part, installation is as described above & in the topics w the spring facing the engine. Also, don't overlook the orange gasket.

Thank you both for your feedback and guidance.  I had been on Partzilla recently but did not know which area to locate the seals.  Thank you for that.  Here is the actual exploded view for the 77 KZ650 B1  >>>   Kawasaki Motorcycle 1977 OEM Parts Diagram for CYLINDER HEAD/COVERS | Partzilla.com

Looks like I may need to order another seal before I get this back on properly.

Ordered up an orange gasket too.  So, I should be good to go when all parts arrive.  Thanks to all for your input!

Received all parts; tach cable, seal w/ wire spring and orange gasket.  The toughest part was removing the old seal from the housing.  Bent a couple of picks getting it out.
good news:   The spring end of the seal definitely went in first.  The orange gasket fits between the tach cable housing and the other side of the seal.   My KZ is whole again!

Picture attached below.  You can see how nicely the new tach cable fits.   I am happy.
