Installing seal in tach drive

When fitting a new seal into the tach drive housing, which end of the seal (small end with spring A, or large end without spring B) goes in first?

I believe "B" is the correct position. Did the old seal vanish?

I recall installing mine as shown in figure "A", and I think that's how it was originally installed. I may be wrong, but I am under the impression that the spring side of any seal faces the inside of the object being sealed and the smooth side faces the outside. Ed

I would think that the proper way is "B"

Seals go in with spring side facing in / flat side facing out. This way any pressure inside the engine pushes the seal lips tighter against seat. Otherwise pressure can push oil past seal. Flat side of seals generally fit flush or slightly recessed in housing. Also make removing old seals possible by punching 2 holes in flat side and pulling seal out. Take a look at every other seal on your engine or the front forks; flat side always faces out. ;) Ed

I'm with Ed on this one. When I changed mine was I very mindful of the orientation of the old one while taking it out. So, I'm pretty sure it was version A.

Version A. Don't drive the new seal all the way in, just flush, and let the tach cable seat it.

I have laboured over this some time ago, I believe its "A" in first.
The above quote of 650Ed is interesting.... I have to agree, I can't think of any seal that have the spring side showing its always the flat side out!

I've bought a tach seal kit for my z900 A4 and cannot fit the large sping oil seal. It just sits on top of the housing.
pic1 - shows the old oil seal before I dug it out. It is clearly inside the housing.
pic2 - shows the cleaned out housing
pic3 - shows the housing with a new seal on the outside from the kit
pic4 - seal will not go inside housing.

Anyone help me with this please - thank you

Your old seal outer body is not completey removed from the tach gear housing!!!

EDIT, add a pic of the empty tach gear housing
