I think Mikaw meant to test the voltage at the coils.

To answer one of your other questions, if your coils test out properly you can simply replace the pickup with a Dyna DS2-1. I just finished doing that with my KZ1000.

One thing I've discovered in the past (I have three Dyna DS2-1 setups) is that their power wire connection is questionable. Instead of using their design I simply connected to the brown double female connector near the headlight. It should be a vacant extra wire in your loom.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

HRM, correct.

BOOM_FIST, I mean the battery voltage to the positive post of the coils. Anything less the 1volt of battery voltage will cause issues... here’s a screen shot of the relay mod... do an internet search for Wired George coil repower.

100% agree. That scotch lock is junk... I just added a small ring connection to the pickup power wire(red) and attached it to the positive on one coil

I really appreciate it! I'll do some more troubleshooting tonight with the info you guys gave me and will report back.

I'll pick up one of those relays and rewire it while I'm at it too. Thanks guys!

Voltage at battery is 12.51V
Voltage at coil primary 9.86V

Secondary coil test, I only got a reading when I put the multimeter leads from one coil output to the other output. Is this right? This is done with no power applied, correct?

Yes...it looks like your coils are good. The problem is likely in the pickup or in the DS3 box. You might check for continuity in your pickup wire going to the coil for 1 and 4 cylinders.

You should also clean all of your connections and re-check your coil voltage to see if it helps.

A couple of months ago I had an intermittent problem with my KZ1000 that I was unable to source. Changed the plug wires and checked the coils. All was good. Rather than go any deeper I simply bought a Dyna pickup and installed it. No more problems.

Went ahead and ordered a new DS2-1 pickup. I figure it’ll replace the pickup if it’s bad and eliminate the DS3 box if that’s the issue. 2 birds with 1 stone. If the coils end up being the problem I’ll order them later.

Guys, I really appreciate all the input! I’ll let you know how things go when I get them in next week.

The coil positive (primary) is really low. I know you mentioned your going to do the coil repower modification. So we can wait till you get you new parts installed... don’t toss out the pickups... loudhvx is the resident ignition guru, might want to check with him if he’d be interested in them, he’s always testing, experimenting and building.

Thanks Mikaw. I am actually fully stocked on Dyna S and Dyna III ignitions for testing. People tend to give away partially broken ones. :)

Haha, well I have no problem donating to the cause! I will have zero use for them once my new one comes in. Just let me know where to send them.

Messed around some today. Did some continuity checks as was suggested and I think I narrowed it down to be a bad DS3 (I think that’s what someone called it) box. The little black box that is in between the pickups and the coils.

You won't need that box with the DS2-1 pickup. But before you buy it why not try wiring your current pickup directly to the coils?
