I changed the sproket set up on my 83 Ltd 550 from factory 16-38 to a 18-38. . The speedo only goes to 85mph.. Can i swap the guages from an 84 Ltd 1100 so I can have a higher reading speedo....

I'm assuming the donor meters are from a ZN1100 Ltd Shaft. If you mean direct swap, no. ..... But, yes, they will function. The 550C & ZN1100 have the same speedo drive gearbox & Japanese motorcycle speedometers have the same 2240 revs per mile ratio. The ZN has an electronic tachometer, so you'd have to figure out the wiring >> usually a power wire & ground wire to the meter plus a signal wire from the black coil wire. Also, the meter socket wiring & pilot box wiring are probably different, but most of that should be kind of easy to sort out.

I'm surprised you could fit the 18 without the chain rubbing against the inner chain guard. I thought 17 was the limit of clearance.

AceBandit77, have you ever thought about of a more modern gauge swap like a KOSO gauge, everything is adjutable to your bike.
KOSO has a great selection of gauges that will fit to your bike. Want to see any pics of you bike.

Other meters. ZR-7 & ZR-7S (ZR750-F/H) meters are kind of similar to the ZN meters & would be 15-20 yrs newer.
For stock type 550-Ltd meters, the KZ1000P are another option >> the 1000P police bikes were pretty much unchanged from 1982 to 2005.
I like the ZRX meters which kind of have a similar look to the stock KZ meters. New zrx meter housings are available on EB for sprucing up a rough looking ZRex set, but I don't know how good the fit is with the stock internals. Complete new zrx meters are also listed, but they're made in china & probably junk.
