Function of the starter switch spring?

I understand the button return function of the spring. But does it also create a connection between power and ground? Mine was broken so I replaced it with a cylindrical spring instead of the stock conical style. The starter works if I jumper it at the plug connection and the headlight switch at the handlebar pod works. If true, any idea where I can find the stock spring? Many thanks!

It might help to know what bike.

On most/all KZ's the starter button does NOT connect to ground.
But the horn button is similar, and it does connect to ground.

Some bikes (my 1981 KZ750 included) use what is also used as a horn button as the starter button. And you are correct - the conical spring provides the connection from the base plate of the button to the button itself, and pressing the button closes the circuit.

The spring comes with the button (the same one that loudhvx linked).

A quick look at the wiring diagram for your year and model should answer the question.

'78 KZ Twin. You are correct it does not connect to ground, a check on the schematic confirmed that. Thanks for the link, it is exactly what I was looking for.
