Hey guys

I have a basket case 82 kz550, have been trying to sort out some wiring issues and come to the conclusion it does not have the factory pulse coils. it seems they replaced them with a dyna s kit, but they only wired up one side. which makes no sense to me.

Is it safe to assume i can unhook the igniter if the coils are doing all the work? or is it doing more than i suspect as i am expecting it to be working as if it had a points system in it.

The wiring for the pulse coil was botched, as it had 3(red,black,white) wires coming out but only two hooked up, one wire didnt go to anything. I looked on dyna s's site but the color coding didnt match so i just figured out what wires went to what side ( may have to swap coil leads if timing an issue)

so im trying to figure out why they did this, im guessing they had issues with the orginal pulse coil or maybe the igniter? clearly this thing is going to be a bit of a project

The coils have to be 3-5 ohm for the Dyna S. This might help.

Can you post a photo of the ignition pulser plate, to figure out what it actually is? It could be a Dyna S or possibly a Dyna III. THey look similar. The Dyna III requires a Dyna igniter box.

Some of the Dyna S kits will include a wire for the oil pressure sensor on a Kz650. That kit also fits the 550 motor, so it's possible the extra wire is only used on a 650.

The instructions posted by Swest explain how to wire it.

And, most importantly, as Swest mentioned, make sure your coils are 3-ohm or higher. The factory 82 Kz550 coils would have been less than 3, so you need different coils.

coils are 3 ohm :) and it is a Dyna s, i pulled it apart and it had the part number on it, just color coding was off to what the manual said for them. just wanted to verify if those in place that id need the igniter in or not, looking at the wiring diagram it didnt appear so but better safe than sorry

They're good people and answer the phone. If in doubt give them a call.
