Help with 1982 KZ750 Spectre was created by JohnLuke
So, I’m a novice at electrical things. I bought a used wire loom from someone and I don’t know how to set it up. I didn’t take photos b4 to took the old one off. So for starters I’d like to just get the head light on. But I’m not sure what goes where. Like there are a few lose bullet wires from the positive and I’m not sure where each goes. I do have the Manual and the wiring diagram doesn’t seem to help.

Could someone give me a detailed instructions?

Thanks!

Is the wire harness from a 750 Spectre? If not, that could be problematic, because a different harness could be quite a bit different.

Was your old wire harness hacked up or something?

Accessory terminals.
By JohnLuke: Like there are a few lose bullet wires from the positive and I’m not sure where each goes

There will be a few unused terminals for adding accessories.
In the wiring diagram you should be able to see that nothing is connected to the accessory terminals.
At the acc fuse box there is a black-white wire & a blue-white wire. blue-white usually terminates at the headlight bucket.
There will also be an unused ground terminal at the headlight bucket & another unused ground wire probably at the neg battery terminal. (my bike has a short acc ground wire w ring connector for attaching it to the battery).

Did you also damage the wiring pigtails to the various components?

As for how stuff was damaged, it might help to know what was done so the mistakes can be avoided with the new wire harness. A long time ago, I broke the plastic insert for the Fr brake master cylinder --- I didn't realize you had to push in on a tab on the underside of the mc. doh. If you have any damaged plastic elec connectors, new oem type are available at various places. CycleTerminal.com has a good selection. One connector in particular that can crumble is the one for the voltage regulator.

Right. Well I believe most of the components were working on the old loom. Which makes me think why the crap did I hack it up? I think I did it thinking I was going to replace the electrical tape on it. Anyway I just would like to figure out how to get the front headlight to work. The positive battery terminal has two red/white connectors and I’m. Not positive where each one goes. Well one from the battery and two from the starter solenoid.

Thanks!

Here's the KZ750-N1 wiring diagram from the KZR Filebase.
www.kzrider.com/jdownloads/Fours/KZ750/K...lectrical/Z750N1.pdf

The headlight not working could be the bulb or the fuse or perhaps something to do with the reserve lighting device. I don't know
anything about that thing. In the main fuse box there should be a 10A fuse for the headlight & the fuse box lid should be embossed
with HEAD LIGHT 10A. ..... assuming your bike has the stock fuse box w 5 fuses & a clear lid.

From the wiring diagram.
The red-white wire at the pos (+) battery terminal goes to the accessory fuse box. Then from the acc fuse box, if you follow the black-white & blue-white wires, notice that they terminate without connecting to anything & they are paired with unused grounding terminals.
These would be some of the unconnected terminals you're seeing on your wire harness.

There should be a heavy black cable from the pos (+) battery terminal to the starter solenoid.

At the starter solenoid there are 2 red-white wires. One red-white goes to the main fuse box. MAIN 30A. embossed on the lid.
The other red-white is the power wire from the voltage regulator.

Okay, very helpful! What about these wires? Also I can’t find a way to connect the second red/white wire from the solenoid to the regulator/rec.

Thanks!

1st pic. There is a yellow-black ground wire near your thumb. What color is the other wire & the one above those two?
Yellow-black may be either for the voltage regulator or the battery neg (-) terminal. notice in the wiring diagram that it shows bullet connectors. ie, arrows pointing to double rectangles indicating that those 2 have double female bullet connectors.
Notice that the blue-white wire from the fuse box has a single female bullet connector.

1st pic. you'll need to replace that damaged connector.

2nd pic. If that connector only has 2 wires, green-white & black-yellow, then that's for the fuel level switch on the fuel tank.
