Looking for more power...is ignition the way?

Hi guys,

I keep breaking the coil mounts on my ELR S1 clone (82gpz1100)
I have broken 3 now from the vibration I guess.

This started to make me thing about replacing them with aftermarket brackets and maybe coils, wires and the whole ignition system.
But can this give me more power?

Could someone please explain the basics on upgrading the coils and advance ignitor system?

A serviceable stock or aftermarket ignition system should be fine so long as it produces properly timed fat blue sparks on factory specified spark plugs.

The ignition coils should function even if suspended in mid-air.
An ignition coil need NOT be grounded, meaning its core need not be connected to the frame.

Would suggest fashioning a mounting system that's flexible enough to prevent breaking from stress and vibration.
Perhaps use rubber mounts, such as tie wraps through rubber grommets.

Good Fortune! :)

You can get some small gains by increasing the gap on the plugs, but it's very stressful on the coils and ignition. Make sure you have new, high-quality coils for that, and make sure the igniter can handle it, or it can all go belly up. You may want to reduce total advance if you get some knocking.

You can also get some gains by using a decent programmable ignition which lets you increase the advance at higher RPMs, by making the advance curve more linear. (The factory mechanical-advance is very all-or-nothing, compared to the later ZX electronic advance system.)

The "core" being mounted to the frame helps in cooling. I ruined a few coils by not having them firmly mounted and goo started coming out of them. Some coils come with universal mounts to adapt them to different bikes. I got my 3 ohm coils not just for power, also to eliminate the possibility of old faulty coils. The power gain was not dramatic. I have them firmly attach to the frame. I also have a relay I installed before I changed them and ignition switch. The relay may no longer be needed but it's there never the less.

It's not a huge factor, but mounting the core to the frame also increases the inductance of the coil. This allows it to store a bit more energy.

I think I'll go with the Dyna 2000 set with rev limiter and comes with coils, Also 2 maps to choose from.

Good Choice
A good ignition system will insure that your motor can achieve its potential.
To Me a good ignition is more for not loosing power ,

C-5 also makes a very good ignition system for our 4 cylinder bikes.

"But can this give me more power?" Not sure about the newer ignition systems for the Z1/KZ motors like Dyna 2000 for example (I run this system on my Z1), but I still have a GEREX CDI system on my KZ1000.

The output of the GEREX CDI system to the spark plugs was in the 60-65K volts and plug gaps were .060" and up. Pops Yoshumura told me he gained 3 hp with this system. RC Collins used it on his drag bikes at one point. I run higher compression pistons and for a time I got in the habit of not checking the condition of the plugs for years. And the ignition would fire the plugs with a gap of .110" and my only clue was that the bike was a "little" harder to start in the morning on my way to work! :) I used to visit the GEREX facility when I lived in LA decades ago.
