Ignition Timing was created by 76KZ900
I have looked through my service manual a dozen times and cannot find how to check timing with a light.. Am I looking for the "F" mark at idle ?

There is nothing in the ignition to adjust on the 1983 KZ1100. Ed

Really? You may want to contact Kawasaki and tell them that the Kawasaki Service Manual for the KZ1100 is wrong. ;) Ed

So if I remove the three screws and turn the ignition plate it isn't going to change the timing at all ?

Yes it will. There has to be an initial timing procedure to set it up.

How do you propose to fasten the plate to the engine if you remove the 3 screws and turn it? The holes in the ignition plate are round; they are not slots (see images below). Are we talking about the same bike in your signature line - a 1983 KZ1100 LTD? Ed

1981 KZ1000 LTD awaiting resurrection

I got it. It was the "F" mark at idle. I removed the ignition housing to install new chrome one. So it had to be "set" Ed my timing plate is slotted and I didn't want to guess that middle of the adjustment slot was gong to be right. I understand that there is no reason to adjust it. But if you disassemble the whole thing, there has to be a check made

Ah, that explains it. I guess someone replaced the non-slotted one at some point. Ed

Then it should be possible to use a timing light to set it at idle.

Three marks : one is TDC for 1 and 4 and two for idle and advanced.

Strip and Lube the ATU with copperslip first , set the rotor /pickup gap evenly for both pick ups. Run at idle and use a strobe to rotate and line up the F mark. You should get full advance to the next mark at about 4000 rpm. Check the ATU is advancing smoothly,
