How do you propose to fasten the plate to the engine if you remove the 3 screws and turn it? The holes in the ignition plate are round; they are not slots (see images below). Are we talking about the same bike in your signature line - a 1983 KZ1100 LTD? Ed

Strip and Lube the ATU with copperslip first , set the rotor /pickup gap evenly for both pick ups. Run at idle and use a strobe to rotate and line up the F mark. You should get full advance to the next mark at about 4000 rpm. Check the ATU is advancing smoothly,
