KZ750 Twin Ignition wiring
20 Mar 2017 22:10
Im putting my own ignition system back together for this engine I'm building (78' KZ750B3) and I didn't know if this needed a ballast resistor since its points ignition? Also Im using a coil from what I think was a 79' GS1000 engine since I couldn't find the original coil from this motor. I noticed the older Honda Goldwing uses a ballast resistor to avoid overheating the coil and burning up the points thought i would incorporate one into this setup. Also, is the voltage output from the rectifier just 14 volts? Kind of starting from scratch on a wiring harness and I've never made one before.
Thanks,
KT

Measure the primary resistance of the coil. That is the small-wire connections. If it is lower than 3 ohms, you will want a large-wattage (like 50 to 100w) ballast resistor to make up the difference to about 4 ohms.
The regulator should get the battery to about 14 to 14.5v... preferably around 14.2 to 14.3 v.
The mattylight thread used to have some Kz750 twin diagrams, but some of the images were missing last I checked.
Try this page. There is a 79 Kz750B4 that should be very similar: post # 463164

But it is kick-only. The starter circuit shown on the 77 B1 diagram slightly later on that page, post#466125, is probably the same as what you have.
If you are doing a bare-bones wiring, I could probably draw something up.

Well this engine is going into a gokart. From what i have collected, the stock 750B3 did not use a ballast resistor. But with the suzuki coil, ill have to check the ohms so thank you, i had no idea how to test that. I have the stock rectifier/regulator from the 750B3 so that should just hook up and ill check the voltage with my multimeter. On a side note, ill be incorporating an oil press. sending unit off of a small block chevy 350 on this engine so i have an oil pressure gauge. It will be working in unison with the factory press, switch for the dummy light. This is the gokart im putting it in.
