Do the plug wires "screw" onto the coils as they do on the plug caps? 1980 Kz1000b Ltd

Do your coils have the ribbed compression boots or do the plug wires appear to go straight into the coil body? If they have the ribbed boots, then yes, the wires unscrew from the coils. unscrew the ribbed boots first. there should be o-rings n stuff to make the wires waterproof. If yours have fittings or boots at the coils without the ribs, then I don't know about those.

Look at the spike. Is it threaded or smooth?

Re: Plug wire connect
03 Oct 2016 11:13If I could see that the wires would be off and I wouldnt be asking. There is a boot that pulls off and the wire goes into the coil.I tried twisting but it doesnt seem to be comming off,I'm afraid I may break the wire.Is it possible that the wires dont come off the coils?Nessism wrote: Look at the spike. Most likely the wire is pushed down over a spike, but I'm not positive on those particular coils. If you decide to try to pull the wire out and it tears instead, you can dig the wire out using a pick tool with a hook bent into one end.

For sure the wires on my stock 1977 KZ650 coils cannot be removed from the coils without causing damage. If yours cannot be removed you may want to consider using NGK splicers. Ed

You can replace the wires but new coils would be better. You can dig out the old wires and slip in new ones with epoxy.

I dug out mine and epoxied a new set of Andrews wires in mine the very first year I got the bike (1980)..... worked great till 84 when I bought the new Dyna's. I measured the depth carefully and marked em so I was sure they bottomed out good on the spike.

If they won't pull out you'll have to dig the insulation out being careful not to break the spike in the center. I'm uploading a clip now.

Use tools like these. You may need to custom bend the tip to help you break apart and rip out the chunks of old wire stuck inside the coil tunnel.

Sorry to make it sound harder than it really was.......Was a long time ago but if I remember right they twisted out fairly easy and maybe only had to gently scrap away a little left over wire with a small screw driver to clean up the hole and maybe a little sand paper to make sure the glue sticks...... they looked just like Nessium's Suzuki coils on the inside.
