82 GPZ Tachometer Woes
02 Jun 2016 09:57
I recently purchased an 82 GPZ 1100, without a working tachometer. So I dissasembled and checked voltages. Brown to Black around 11.7 V - OK. Brown to Black/Yellow reading 2.2 V at idle, perfect. However the dial still doesn't turn. Is there anyone out there who knows any details about the circuit board itself? Is there anything else I can check or do to get this thing working? They aren't easy to find for an '82.
Thanks
Thanks

Sounds like the stepper motor is borked. You may be able to find a replacement as far as voltage and range, not so sure about finding one that will mount in the gauge housing.
Bikes: 82 kz750 CSR, 03 Suzuki gsf1200s (stage 2), 73 CB 750 bored to 849, big cam, ports head, big valves, lots of other goodies....

Yep. I found an '84 gauge locally for cheap, swapped the internals, and mounted on the '82 faceplate. The only trouble is, its about 2mm larger than the '82 causing a slight gap in the housing... and who knows if it's accurate (as long as the rpm scale is the same as the '84...?). Either way, it's a temporary solution until the rebuild this winter.

If the new one I bought and exchanged won't work right, I will do the same. Been eye balling quite a few Tach's from other models and they're cheap. I'm beginning to think the quality isn't on par with OEM.

Ya, its an easy enough swap... the splicing just takes some patience and small fingers are an asset.

If I do it will be electric. Red line has one for my bike but it's $250! I don't think so.
