Start Button Handlebar Switch Rebuild ?
23 May 2016 15:48
When I push the starter button on my 77' KZ1000A, sometimes the motor will hesitate to turn over but will start. Like maybe there's a possible corroded contact inside the switch that will cause this momentary hesitation?
Solenoid and all other electrical connections seem to be good. Shorted between the 2 posts on the solenoid and electric starter turns over rapidly as it should.
Ordered some Deoxit/D5 to clean connections, so should be here soon.
Is there a Good illustration or Post that someone may of done in repairing/rebuilding these handlebar switches?

I have similar problems on my '78 KZ650C2.
Sometimes I need to push the button, and try and push it side to side or in a circle to get her to fire.
You can buy a new button and spring, and I did, but I have not swapped it in yet.
I bought the button at Z1Enterprises.
The horn uses the same button and spring.

I also saw these on Z! Ent. too. I'm still going to take apart the switch and inspect. Was just hoping someone has done this already?

Pretty simple really. Button, spring and contact. I used 630 paper to clean it.

Switch gear are pretty simple to rebuild. If you have any doubts, take pictures at each step as you disassemble. You can use them for reference if needed when you reassembling. Here's my tips:
1. Cover your work bench with a light colored terry cloth towel and work over it. The screws are tiny and easily dropped, plus there are small springs and/or detent balls that may pop out when you least expect it. The terry keeps them from bouncing off your work bench never to be seen again. The light color makes them easy to spot.
2. Pick-up a Glass fiber electronics cleaning pen. They work great for cleaning contacts is tight areas. The glass fibers leave no conductive residue to cause shorts like wire brushes can. I found mine at a marine supply dealer. Here's an on-line source.

Hey MDZ1 thanks for that tip. learn something new all the time. Wish I new about that fiberglass tip cleaners a long time ago!
I'm putting that on my list to buy. I never was into electronics, or OHM's or multi testers, iods and diodes
As far as starter buttons, I have a few I saved from bad switch blocks if someone needs one for free.
Just send me an address.
