How do I Remove Starter Motor from 1982 KZ750F

I have a 1982 KZ750F. The starter works but will sometimes connect to start the bike. But most of the time the starter motor is not connecting to start the bike and just wines as if it’s missing gears between the starter and motor.

So I was removing the Starter but the starter motor (cylinder) split in 2 parts after I removed the 2 long screws. The other part is connected to the motor but I can’t figure out how to take it off. Where are the bolts that are holding it on?
Do I have to take apart the other side of the motor “where the oil reservoir is at”, to get to it

What is a KZ750F model? Never heard of that one. Got any photos?

Assuming this is a 4 cylinder bike, you need to remove the sprocket cover, then the screws holding the starter motor to the engine cases will be visible.

What you describe sounds more like a starter clutch than a starter issue.

The starter cylinder itself is actually 3 pieces; a central tube and two end caps. More than likely, you are winding up with the end cap stuck to the side of motor. You will need to gently pry it, with your fingers I hope, from the side of the motor. It pops of with some pressure. I am by no means an expert but I just did this to my bike last month and the same thing happened to me. When you have pulled the starter out in its entirety, you will have a long cylinder with a gear on the end that goes into the casing.

As far as your noise, you might also want to search for starter clutch issues.

Oh yeah...get a manual. Cheap and helpful. No substitute.

I'm under the assumption the OP has already removed the clutch cover but perhaps not. I agree: this sounds a lot like a starter clutch issue than an actual starter issue.

Thank you .
So can I just get the starter clutch rebuilt or do I have to buy a new one?

Is your starter motor on the left side of the bike ?
Like this ?

If so and if you removed the retaining bolts AND the long bolts which hold the motor together and pulled, then I could see the motor coming apart leavinghalf behind.
You could try to re insert the long bolts and then pulling.

When the startr motor is pulled out this is what you see............. assuming yours is like mine.

Is the F model a shaft
