The "coil" is a high voltage flyback transformer. It's potted (molded) to provide a vacuum seal to the windings. If it has cracks then air is getting in and the corona starts eating up the insulation on the wires. It may work for a while but it's a dead man walking.

Get a new coil or don't ride it any further than you want to push it home.

Don't fix it until it's broken.

About 3 years ago I noticed cracks on coil of my Dodge Durango. I repaired the coil and ordered new one from ebay for $10. I received it but never installed. It takes 10 min tor replace.
A few months ago I noticed cracks on Mercedes coils. I bought new ones and installed them, but 1 or 2 of them were not good. I repaired old ones and installed them, no problems!

The ST used different coils than any other Kawasaki, as usual, and cracking may be somewhat normal. My 1980ST only has 4000 miles on it, and both coils are cracked, I've never seen a cracked coil on any of my other Kawasakis. It doesn't effect operation on mine far as I can tell.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Cracks go deeper and moisture will get in. It is going to be hard to start in the morning and rain can stall engine. You need to seal cracks somehow before they kill coil.

Ok coilers! I won't tell you about the OEM Harley 4.5 ohm coil that fires my Blue Streak ignition car points that fit Chevy 6 cylinders 230-250 C.I. That cracked 10 or 12 years ago that I applied epoxy to that crack! And this thing still fires and goes.

BUT here is my real question??

The DYNA 3 OHM Coil square bolt mount bar is loose? it can be hammered back and forth a little. I noticed the screws to the primarys was closer on 1 coil and different on other. These things are still sitting in the same shipped box with this guys name on it from 2000, 16 yrs ago! WTF?
DYNA 3 ohm coils. I bought these not on eBay! From Dragbike.com Yes that long ago! 2000 From some Bastard! DOES ANYONE know him? I paid $75 back then for a dyna S and these coils. Painted Red from a dragbike. Only 1 pick up was good, other not. plus these coils.
