Rev Counter

is it possible to convert my Z1000 LTD 1981 from an electrical rev counter back to the trusty mechanical rev counter,

I not sure & could be wrong, but I would guess not. Your cylinder head probably doesn't have the tach drive stuff & the exhaust camshaft won't have the worm gear that will drive a tach pinion gear.

Hi Martin ,thanks very much for your reply, for my own curiosity now I'm just going to whip the rocker cover off in a desperate hope to find a drive gear ,the rest of the externals I can get on line ,so fingers crossed ,ill let you know.

That would be the first thing to check in terms of viability. Isn't a 1981 the J type motor in which case I don't believe it has either the gear on the cam or the cable drive outlet. But I could be wrong as the US models were not always in synch with the European ones.

Hi ,the day has run away with me already , yes the head has a place for the worm drive but it will need drilled out ,so I'm hoping the cam will have the mating gear on it too, I'm led to believe from Kawasaki UK the bike is a KZ 1000K1 or LTD in the UK ,I haven't even managed to get out to the man cave today : but thanks for all your help ill let you know how I get on

You might look into getting some HP cams with the worm drive on the exhaust cam. Then you can have the head drilled and drill and tap for the the tach drive keeper bolt.

Hi thank you all for your indepth knowledge , needless to say the exhaust cam does not have the machined gear on it ,so back to plan A just to buy another electronic rev counter .many thanks Iain

My big ?? is why would you want to do this, it's a LOT of work when the electric Tach is more reliable and accurate than a mechanical one.
