kz1100 coil omhs
25 Jan 2016 13:40
Hey guys, when starting my top end rebuild this winter One of the first things I pulled off was a set of melted coils. They actually worked fine but were melted on the bottom. anyways I checked z1 Enterprises looking for new coils and even under specifically looking for my bike they have multiple sets of coils listed. Both dual output and single output and 2.2 omhs, 3.0 ohms and even 1.5 omhs coils. Ive searched my manual, online and on this site and cant seem to find a definitive answer. Plenty of answers for kz1000's but nothing on the 1100's. ....Hellppp, what coil ohms do i need for a 83 kz1100 ltd!?!?

Thanks dave! I found a set of both those and the regular green 3 ohm dynateks. Your bike looks amazing, looks like you had to macgyver those into pace a bit though. They didnt fit the original brackets?

Yep, had to improvise mounting these. Two end-tapped lengths of 1/2" aluminum rod, made a dual-coil assembly to wedge snug up-between the frame members...held firmly in-place now with a long nylon/velcro strap wrapped around the frame, eliminating the need for the zip-ties

Hmmm i just order a pair off ebay, i guess ill have to mount my uniquely too. Can i reuse my stock wires and just replace the connections on both ends with the connectors the kit comes with? And do i really need a crimp like the website says? Theres got to be a way to crimp with just pliers or something

If they are solid wires, you can crimp the with pliers if you are careful.

I used factory pre-crimped ends that came on the Dyna DW-200 7mm solid-core plug wires for attachment to the coils. The other end has NGK spark plug caps, simply threaded onto the cut wire...no crimping required at all.

Factory electronic ignition from that era usually had 2.3 ohms. The dyna, large, grey 2.2 ohm coils are the best match. 3.0 ohms usually works fine too, but charge a little slower. As long as the motor is stock, you probably won't notice any difference using 2.2 or 3.0.
The only issue with the mini coils is that Dyna warns they are for strictly-controlled dwell applications, like what is found in the computer-based modern ignitions. The factory electronic ignition, from back then, is just an analog circuit, so the dwell is not completely controlled, but the Kaw factory system has better dwell control than points (which have fixed dwell).
The issue is at idle, the dwell is very long, and really small coils tend not to handle the excess heat as well as big coils, which have more mass to dissipate the heat.

I just read the same thing about the coils being for controlled dwell systems. Figures i come across the info after i ordered them. Any feedback from you daveo would be appreciated. Have you run the bike with those coils yet and did you experience any difference or issues??

Because the Kaw system controls dwell t some degree, the issue would be longevity. Factory coils can last 30 or 40 years, so we may be talking about waiting decades to see the difference.

Hopefully this old thread can be of some help too. Can somebody please fix the title spelling?.... it's driving me nutz. Too bad nobody has something closer like a 2.5 ohm or something.

It seems to me that one might fabricate a heat shield under the coils to enhance longevity, Just thinkin' out loud !
