Get yourself one of these. You smack it with a hammer and it loosens the screw without stripping.

A must have for ant 30 year old bike no matter if you have the JIS bits. The screws are IN there and won't come out without it.

You can also use a extension for those hard to reach places.

A common #3 phillips head bit works well on engine cover screws. In my experience a JIS bit is not necessary.
