Ignition fuse location, nothing turns on
27 Jun 2015 09:13
I have a 82 GPZ 750. I think I may have an ignition fuse blown. When I turn the key I get nothing. I have charged the battery and still nothing. Is there a fuse for the ignition system and where do I find it. I think it may be a 20 amp fuse. I see the 10amp fuses in the side cover but that is not the ones I am looking for.

According the the parts diagrams the 1982 GpZ750 has 2 fuse holders (see image below). One holds two 10 amp fuses and one holds a 20 amp fuse plus two 10 amp fuses. I'm not sure where the fuses holders are located, but after you find them both be sure to check the fuses using a meter or replace all fuses with new ones. The problem with those glass tube fuses is that sometimes the filament will break free from one of the end caps. When this happens, the fuse will look perfectly fine, but it will not conduct current. (Guess how I know. ) Ed

Seems like I read somewhere that 1982 was the year Kawasaki began converting to blade fuses and that the late-run GPz 750s had them and that all the fuses were in one box.

Does your bike have glass fuses or blade fuses as mentioned by TexasKZ.
If they're glass, the inside of the main fuse box cover is probably embossed to identify the fuses & wire colors.
A wiring diagram should be helpful. mbsween.bike-night KZ750L3 page Scroll down & click "The Bible" link.

thanks. Ok I found the 20amp fuse. The previous owner had rigged it to the fuse box with black electrical tape, so it was hiding pretty good.
My problem is that my new horns, Hello superloud, are blowing the fuse. The fuse hold with one horn hooked up, but not two. the bike came with only one horn, maybe that is a clue that something was amiss. is it possible that two Hella horns draw too much current? I thought this was a common set up. any ideas?

Those two horns probably draw too much current. Typically, a two-horn install requires a relay and power line directly from the battery with its own fuse.

Agree. When I added a second horn on my bike, a FIAMM 72112 Freeway Blaster Horn (Low Tone - F), I left the stock horn in place and triggered a relay from the stock horn circuit. That relay then provides connectivity from the battery to the second horn with a fuse in the circuit. Here' s what I did; it works perfectly and didn't require cutting or removing any of the stock wiring. Everything tucked up into the frame so none of it is visible unless you remove the fuel tank. I used this relay - www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/10556/12552/-1 Ed

Thanks, TexasKZ. I will try to duplicate that set up. I am not an electrical whiz, but I can follow instructions. Any more detail you can provide will be helpful. Will all the horn wiring be apparent when I lift the tank?

I would start by tracing the wiring from the horns. You may even want to try replacing the fuse and disconnecting 1 horn to see if the other will operate. If it does, you'll know for sure that tracing the wiring from the operational horn is worthwhile. Ed

I have a relay for my two horns. The horn button completes the ground. It can't handle two horns. A relay is about $15 at AZ or OR.

The horns are both working now with a 30amp fuse. This is the fuse that is in the 83 and later GPZ. But I think for the long run I will install a relay so it doesn't surprise me in the middle of nowhere. Thanks guys.

You can burn out the little contact in the horn button.
