Flasher/blinker problems
27 Jun 2015 02:34
And my problems just keeeep coming.
Lol.
I have the non working left flasher and a right blinker that works about half a$$ of the time.
Lets start with the flashers. They haven't worked since I got the bike running. What would cause one side not work? The blinker works fine on that side. ???
Now the half a$$ working right blinker. What would cause one side to only work sporadically? The switch would be the first suspect but I think it's working fine. But I'll check it anyway. Other than the switch. ???
Also whatever it is, it also sporadically blows the flasher/blinker fuse. Don't know if it's blowing due to the flasher problem, the blinker problem or a combination of both. ???
Thanks again everybody ... Steve. Lol

Might be a loose solder joint in the switch block. Check all your plug in connectors.

30+ year old solder joints should certainly be at the top of your suspect list along with every connector in the circuit. Some quality time with your volt/Ohm meter should pinpoint the problem area(s).
Have you carefully cleaned the bulb sockets? I had a similar problem with a Concours I used to own, and discovered that one of the rear lens seals had failed, letting the housing fill up with water and mud.
Generous doses of Deoxit 5 + Q-tips and tiny brass brushes can make a huge difference in electrical performance on these old machines.
Could also be from a failing flasher. One of the members here (650Ed?) devised a simple way to adapt a modern flasher unit to the old system.

Flasher relay was my next suggestion. It's only 30 years old, why would it burn out now?
