Has any one any experience with the after market speedos and tachs I see all over the net for anywhere from $160 to $180 each?

Can you post a link or two of what you've seen? Are they mechanical or electronic?
No first hand experience, but for a mechanical drive speedometer you'll need to get one that says something about being 2240 which indicates the ratio --- I think all Japanese bikes use that. Others may say 2:1 or 1:1. The speedo on my 81 650 says 2240 revs = 1 mile on the back & I did the math for a number of models for comparison.

I've got a koso DB-01r on my z650. So far I've been impressed. It's much more compact than the stock gauges. You can get them with all kinds of different speed sensor options too. My thread over in projects has some pics of it if you need them.

I was thinking I could have bought an aftermarket speedo or tach and been feeling done with this part of the restoration.

Sorry Steve I missed seeing this question... pretty much yes. I'm tired of R&R'ing these gauges and after three separate loops on both, including peeling back those damnable compression rings, I'm still not satisfied.swest wrote: Do you mean the stock replacement ones from z1partsinc etc?

I'm with you. I'll but a speedo when I can afford it, (other things more important) then get a new Tach. Mine looks good, it works but for some reason it won't go down to zero with the cable on. I'll put my old ones on eBay "parts or not working" Let someone else F with them.
