Could it be an early production 1977, that was mistakenly titled as a 1976? Maybe th op is merely going by the production date? Maybe the early ones were officially 1976 models outside the U. S.?
For sure the cable that attaches to the engine case, or maybe the frame if some po got creative, should go to the negative post of the battery. Unless of course this bike was specially built for the British Empire by British Leyland. In those years, the Prince of Darkness (aka Lucas Electrics) had a fetish for positive ground systems. Tickled a carb lately? Left side kick starter?. Oooooo, I'm getting all goosebumpy!

judging by the rear fender, it's a Euro model. It's interesting it is said to have 84 HP when they came out here they had 91. The 900 had 82 HP stock.

Either way, I'd bet a 1976 Z1000 uses the same battery as the later ones. Wasn't it a 14L-A2? Personally, I am a big fan of the AGM batteries. I've had really good luck with them.

I have no experience with other types of batteries. Always stuck with the tried and true. I know people that bought the high end one only to have them fail.
