Starter Motor - Am I doomed? was created by GulfKZ
So I purchased a 1980 KZ440 a few months back. Started and ran fine. I had an 80s Japanese bike specialist shop in phoenix overhaul the thing and it was running perfectly. Bad news was they said the starter (which worked) needed rebuild because the seal was bad and leaked oil in. It would also need new brushes because they were covered in oil. bought the rebuild kit and began taking it apart when one of my idiot friends comes by and says hey what ya doing and picks up the unsrewed starter motor. Parts all fall out the bottom. I put it together how it looked before best I could and everything matched up and shut. Problem is it doesnt turn now. Im in over my head and another friend who has rebuilt tons of starters says he cant figure out whats wrong. A new starter on ebay it 550! I love this bike and havent even gotten to ride it once since purchase. Please help! What can i do?

Pics of the starter. They're not complicated. Do they have used ones? I've been known to take two and make one. In my early twenties I bought two Pontiac's. One was a 67 Le Mans and the other was a Tempest. Again it was the starter and a gummed up carb. The jerk that sold them to me told everyone I would never get one to run. Ha ha ha ha. Two days later me and my EX showed up in the La Mans. Close your mouth or the flies will get out.
Where there's a will there's a way. Sometimes Will's not around.

You guys rock. So I saw that diagram before and I know for a fact I dont have all those washers. Also i may be an idiot but you dont need that clutch assembly attached to bench test right? Cant you touch the wires to the bolt and the ground

Should be able to but you'll need some AMPs behind it.

If you can't figure it out you probably have a local starter/alternator rebuilder near you. For my cars I go there before I'll get a no name rebuild from the parts stores. But really, they are not complicated as long as your brushes are in good shape.
