Wiring a Reg/rec combo unit to 76 kz900 was created by mitchelldaughtry
Ok guys when I bought this bike the dude I got it from thought the motor was a z1 so he bought a reg/rec combo (one piece) unit for a z1. So my question is will the z1 reg/rec work on the kz? And could someone tell me how to wire it in? its going on an amen savior chopper frame so there is now wiring or plugins at this point. Also could someone tell me how to ohm the stator out to test it and see if its good. Thanks alot for your time and help in advance.

No, black to ground. Brown to the Ign. switch. You need a manual.

Ok so I went home and pulled out the regulator and it has 3 yellow wires, 2 green, and 2 red. Does this sound right? did the dude buy the wrong one?

That sounds like a one size fits all kind of unit. I'll have to defer to others here that has experience using these things. There are other threads talking about using cheap CHINESE ones for testing but only temporarily. You might check other builds AKA Chopper builds to see how they did it. I'm not a fan of hacked up Brat/Bobber builds and have seen only a few Choppers I like. That's just me. There are however some naked modern HP builds here with modern suspension that have really impressed me. If I had the money and time, I'd be building one of those too. There's one KZ 1000 build I'd love to dive into the tight twisties on and ride it like a 20 year old. :woohoo:
As things are, I'm just happy with what I got.

I agree on the hack choppers I would much rather see a super clean stocker than a chopper. But I got the whole bike for a song so im putting it together. I've got a cb750 that im planning on putting modern suspension and brakes on from a sport bike I got most the parts just got to get started building it.
could you share some links to where I could buy the right regulator from? A good one not some cheap ebay Chinese junk. Thanks for all your help and thats a good looking 1000 by the way I like those hard bags and trunk.

Thanks. I bought another used KZ 1000 Reg/Rect off eBay. $39 Being a semi retired Grandpa, money's tight now days. I'd rather have bought a new one. The old style Regulators and Rectifiers are old tech. The regulators were notorious for failing and cooking batteries. The combo is the only way to go. You can find the on eBay and other motorcycle sites. One that comes to mind is the Mosfet. It's talked about here.
