No reason for oil in there but am thinking the mess might have been carbon dust from brushes plus grease. How did you clean it ?
ThatGPzGuy will be interested as will I.

I didn't really clean it well, just let it hang over an oil pan. Once it stopped dripping, I used about a roll of shop towels wiping everything down. Then I hooked it up to the bike to see if it still worked, and it did.
Several months ago I replaced the hose I had on my breather, with a fancy little UNI filter so I could look "COOL" shortly after my starter issued started...

It was oil. I did some research and discovered that if your crankcase breather becomes obstructed, oil can be forced into the starter at the starter gear through the gaskets.
Now thats interesting.
Thanks for replying

More like a messy pain in the ass! I just got the starter NOS like 2 years ago. I knew something had to have gone wrong with it, the last one lasted 30 years!
The combination of the carbon buildup and oil make it into a really black goop. I wish I would have taken more pictures. It was a very strange issue.
I don't have the bike running 100% yet, but once I do, I will open it back up and make sure the orings are still doing their job and keeping the oil out.
