Clutch lever wires was created by nickleo373
Hey everyone. I'm in the process of replacing the entire clutch lever assembly on my 81 kz550 due to stripped threads which didn't allow me to replace only the cable. There are 2 wires that come from the assembly and run into the headlight. The rubber that protects the wires on the new assembly is worn but the wires on my broken part are like new. Is there a way to disconnect the old wires from the clutch lever so I can transfer them to the new unit? Before I go pulling on wires and breaking them I figured I should ask here

There is a tab that if you push it in with a small screwdiver or similar you can extract the clutch lever switch.
The switch is there so, on some models, you need to dip the clutch before the starter will work. Likewise the stand needs to be up on other models.

You were smart to ask rather than just yanking of the wires. You should be able to find a very small hole in that clutch perch near the lockout switch. If you push a steel pin, (not pointy) through the hole it should depress one of the little ears on the switch (see image below). The switch has 2 ears, but only 1 will actually be engaged and preventing the switch from slipping out of the perch. While the ear is depressed you can slip the switch out of the perch. Ed

Awesome. That'll be a lot better than wrapping the entire thing in electrical tape and hoping for the best.

A picture tells a thousand words , good call asking here, simple- minded folk would have forced it and broken it beyond repair.
