Lithium Batteries VS Other choices
09 May 2015 12:16
Needing a new battery for the Kaw 1000.
Been reading some old posts here that are pro and con on new battery technology.
I can get locally new bike batteries for as low as 40 bucks or go high end Shorai at 160 Dollars.
Any new info from the group would be appreciated.
Thanks Dave

I was the battery guru at my last job for 20 years and I did the work on the first Li batteries when Sony brought them out around 1990. In a nutshell:
1) Best value for $$$ is the lead acid AGM battery. No question, I'll never buy a wet cell again.
2) Li batteries are either wonderful or horrible according to the many posts I read, I suspect it is because the bike's charging voltage is not accurate enough to match what the Li battery needs. If it is a match, the battery works well. If not, disaster. Li batteries also have problems at cold temperatures because their internal impedance is too high.
In my humble opinion, the astronomical cost and iffy performance of Li means I won't use them. If you absolutely don't have room for a full size battery, you have to but otherwise I am not a believer. Just one opinion.

This is the battery I am running. It's almost 2 years old now and still cranks like new.

I'm using a SSB lithium battery after a recommendation my brother, who has been using one for 2 years and thinks it's great. At $120 it's more expensive that a lead acid, but it's 220CCA and weighs 600g. I can't fault it.

AGM battery. Good vibration resistance and can be mounted any way you want except upside down.

After recently starting one of my bikes after the long winter with a 5 year old AGM Scorpion from batterystuff.com, I have to say I've never had a battery that good, ever. I only trickle charged it once over the winter, and it cranked like a new battery.

I am looking for a new battery as well. The PO had a little lawnmower battery installed for some reason. No wonder I was always having problems. The one Bounty Hunter suggested is about 2 times bigger than my previous one. Which means I'll have to fab a new battery box. Not stoked on that idea. Does anyone have a suggestion for smaller sized batteries that can run a '76 KZ750b? I don't really know much about batteries.
Would the linked below battery work for me?
