Hey everyone. I think there may be some sort of parasitic drain on my bike. I charge up the battery and ride it for a day or two. Then the next day it doesn't have enough battery to crank the engine at all. The bike charges at 14.5 volts at 3500 rpm and has a volt reading of between 12.2 and 12.6 while idling between 1200 and 1500. I noticed what I believe is a ground wire (black and yellow), attached to the reg/rec connector which has a burned connection. The wire is hot to touch when the bike is on. The wire itself it not burned in any way. I've also noticed another wire attached to the main wiring harness that I haven't been able to find the correct placement for so I have taped it to the fender. (Can't find it on a wiring diagram). Can anyone point me in the right direction to figure this problem out?

Usually, Burned wire = too much current=volt drop= bad connections.

14.5v seems ok to me, but parasitic drain needs investigation. Turn it off and get an ammeter(current amps) between the battery live...when it is off, their should be no circuits connected. The fusebox is permanently live 20A connected direct from the battery, this is the short red/white wire from Battery +ve that isn't fused. Other circuits are fed from this.

Any accesories wired direct to the battery?

Charge the battery, disconnect the red/white wire and let sit overnight. You may have a dead or shorted cell. It can ruin the regulator besides frying wires. If it drops in voltage, you'll know.

Bike's charging system seems okay.

To determine battery condition, would remove and service (if applicable), charge overnight, and have it load-tested for free at your favorite local automotive supplier such as AutoZone, Walmart, etc.

If the battery fails the load-test, it should be replaced.

Good Fortune! :)

I charged up the battery overnight and it only charged to 12.3 volts. I let it sit for a couple hours and it dropped to 12.1. I figured there was a problem so I took it to advance auto to have it tested and the CCA were low. I'll find a new battery this week. Does anyone have a recommendation for a battery that is reliable but not a huge amount of money?

My local Walmart has AGM batteries for 79.99... That's about the best deal I've personally found on an AGM. They are a lot better as they resist vibration but don't require any charging system upgrades like lithium...
