Pull the tank... pull the seat... pull the headlight. Start looking for exposed/rubbed wires. Sounds like a dead short...

One of the first things to inspect is integrity of the ground connection where the negative battery cable attaches to the rear of the engine. And connections of the cables at the battery posts.

Well, PICs of the shifter, or a manuf/model, and the guys here should be able to ID/assist.. Beside checking everything mentioned, this could be as good a place to start with the cleanup.
