Kz650 wiring mystery
14 Feb 2014 14:47
Bike hasn't run for years and it is one problem after another. I know nothing about history.
Can anyone tell me what wires go where? I've tried every combination I can think off.
You can see the two grey ends from the front turn signals pointing at each other. Then two greens and a grey that run in the main harness to the rear. I know some combination should give me signals but 5 wires means someone is going to be left out with a dance partner. Please help!

Please add the year and model of your bike to your signature line. There are numerous different wiring configurations for KZ650s. Ed

The 1978 KZ650 SR is the 1978-D1 model. There should be a grey wire and a blue wire coming from the right turn signal (along with a black/yellow ground), and there should be a green wire and a blue wire coming from the left turn signal (along with ah black/yellow ground). The blue wire from each turn signal stalk powers the front running lights. The grey is the right blinker; the green is the left blinker. There should also be a grey and a green that connects to the 9-pin connector, and those power their respective turn signal indicators on the little lighting cluster between the gauges (where the oil light, brake light, neutral light etc. are). Below is a link to the wiring diagram for the KZ650-D1, and below that is a picture of the turn signal wiring inside the headlight shell. Ed

No matter what combination I did, I couldn't get any turn signals. I'll be fresh for it tomorrow.

I couldn't wait ... Your description doesn't match what I'm seeing. I have grey, blue and black from both left and right. My nine pin connector is full

Where is the relay on this bike? This wiring is jacked. I found a mangled junction under the tank. I get the same reading when touching my probes to the green and grey that heads toward the back of the bike.

It sounds like a previous owner has screwed up the wiring. You may need to use the wiring diagram to try to trace out the circuits. On my KZ650-C1 the turn signal flasher unit is behind the left side cover. Ed
