Yeah I am sure that would be the best thing to do, but don't want to spend the money at this time of the year...

Wow those spoons did the trick! Took me two minutes to pry the needle off without damaging it. Then it took me 30 minutes to find it, because it flew through my garage
I had the hardest time to get the ring back on there that holds it all together. Doesn't look too good but it works. If I ever do a museum restoration, I will definitely have some specialists take care of them.

Z1Enterprises.com sells replacement gauge cover clamps that fit some of the early KZs.

Z1Ent - Gauge Covers Chrome Top (pair) Kawasaki EM58-12410

Edit: these are decorative covers & I don't think they are intended to replace the clamping ring.

Yes I saw those, but if I am not mistaken, these clamps just hold the top chrome cover and the bottom bucket together, I don't believe they can function as a replacement for the crimped-on rings that ensure the water tight seal of gauge glass and body. But maybe I am wrong???

What I've always done is to cut through the ring with a cutting disc at the very bottom of the gauge and pull it off. After repair of the instrument, I put some black R.T.V. along the inside of the ring, re install it and then cover it with a hose clamp and tighten the clamp. Let it sit overnight. Removed the calmp and cleaned up with some laquer thinner. There is no visible damage to the clamp except for the tiny slit at the bottom, wich is now covered.

That seems to be a better idea compared to what I ended up doing. Cut the ring as you did and spot welded it back onto the speedo housing. I know, not pretty but works....

They did, but next time I'll have a spotter with my so it won't take me 30 minutes to find the needle in the other corner of the garage ;)

A bit late now but I used a screwdriver to release the ring and to replace it I had 2 pieces of alu. tube which I got from motorcycle exhaust shop that are close to the same size as the ring and taped the edges of the tubes and
slowly tapped down until I was :woohoo:

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationIt looks like someone has started making reproduction clamp rings for these gauges.

The eBay auction was:
ebay.com/itm?itemId=291049791377

The seller is retro-motorcycles. But my guess is they are made by one of the Japanese reproduction folks (e.g. Doremi).

Been thinking of doing this (for my KZ650) just to wipe out the water spotting ....... but Was thinking you would need to cut it in two places but you can do it on the bottom only and get it off without springing it outta shape ???

This is defently on my list to do if so. Thanks.
