These guys have a good description on their site, but don't show what I need to know.
zresto.com/
I attach a pic of the needle being out, I don't think anything broke off there.

Specifically, this picture seems to show the needle-shaft poking up out of the main assembly, where as the picture you posted shows what looks like this same shaft stuck into the needle body itself.
Also from your picture, it looks like this shaft presses into the brass looking tube attached to the underside of the needle. I can't see any other way the needle assembly you show could connect to the assembly shown in the zresto photo. (unless you pull your bit of shaft out and set it aside).

The only good thing is that the broken needle is from a not working speedo where I only needed the class from and I thought I'd practice to get the needle off and on. So I think when I attack the real one now, I will need to hold that needle shaft with needle nose pliers and carefully pull the needle up. Or maybe leave it alone and live with what I have.....

You might want to try to find something like this watch hand puller:
This type of puller pushes against the dial face to evenly lever up the watch hand (or needle in your case). Since the disk at the center of the needle is pretty wide relative to most watch hands, this exact tool may not work. But you may be able to find something similar.
Or maybe a pair of levers like this:

It might be better to get ahold of Zresto and see if they will do your speedo first. I sent my Tac and speedo in to them and am pleased with the results. Red line on the TAC is no longer pink. Glass is new. Gages checked for accuracy. Plus they look new.
