Points Plate and Hardware
26 Sep 2013 01:11
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to KZ. Already got some help on here before and it was a great help. Now I need some more. I need to replace my points plate and the hardware. Does anyone know a good spot or is it just ebay and try to find a decent quality?

You really need to add the year and model of your bike in your signature line where it currently says "Love me some bikes." That way you won't need to include the year/model in the text of every posting, and we will be able to help answer your questions. Ed

You might be able to convert your 400 to an electronic ignition. If so, then a good donor bike might be a KZ440.
The KZ400.com site will probably have info about it & whether or not it is an option.

Good! The 1976 KZ400-D3 uses part number 21135-009 for the points assembly (see image below). Here's a place that has them in new old stock (NOS) for less money than eBay. Just plug in the part number at the link. Ed

Thanks. I"ll look into that, but at the moment, I just want to get it running and make sure that's the issue. I'm going to have to rebuild the trans or clutch this winter, so the cheap route and the moment is the best route!

Like I said above, maybe in the future. Right now, I just want to get it running. I'll do a bigger job of it over the winter. with the plate only being $30, I can start there and work on the electronic ignition in the future, when I'm stuck not riding. Do you have a link to the process? I don't know how to go about it. martin_csr mentioned looking on the kz400.com site.

Someone here on KZR has probably done the conversion, but the info may be more easily found at that other site --- look in the forum section over there.

The process is remove the point plate and install the electronic ignition in it's place. That's it
