79 650 b3 starter not engaging 100% was created by Crytsr1
Kk did some searching and didn't find an answer. On this bike the starter engages about 30% of the time. The rest it just spins really roughly the marble sound I read about in other threads. I assume I need to pull it off and look deeper but any info up front as to what exactly to look for would be much appreciated. The girlfriend in not to thrilled about have to kick start the bike 70% of the time :woohoo:

Sounds like the starter clutch. Z1 should have the parts you need, as will lots of other places. The starter was fairly common, as I recall, so there should still be plenty of parts around.

Here's some starter clutch info that should be helpful. Ed

Along with the starter clutch assembly you should check the starter clutch gear. Here's a comparison between a new one and one that's worn.
