IC Ignitor? was created by lowie182
Hey everyone, I have a spark problem just like alot of others here it seems lol!

I am working on a 1981 Kawasaki KZ750 H2 (4-cyl.) w/electronic ignition.

well as far as i can tell with my multi-meter my coils are fine, pick-ups are fine except in my service manual it says the ohm is supposed to be a bit differnt if i switch the + and - terminals between red&yellow and Black&Blue EDIT:(they sit at about 460 ohm)EDIT:..... but i cant seem to test the IC Ignitor properly, at first i wanted to jump and say "theres your problem" but i tested another ignitor laying around that i have used and know works and im getting the same reading off of it... if i use a screwdriver and tap the pick-ups with ignition on it sparks 1&4(black&blue) but not 2&3 (Red&Yellow)but if i wiggle the spark plug wire (from coil to plug) and try to rotate the plug in the socket i get a nasty zap! hehehe so its working intermitently.

my book says to test properly you need some kawasaki electro-test machine and doesnt give much for what values im looking for and how exactly to test/trouble shoot... i was thinking i got a 550LTD manual somewhere that if i remember correctly had actually procedures and values for the spark system.

Iv been through a few cars, 2 KZ550 and now my KZ750, i have fair knowledge of electronics so please feel free be as technical and long winded as possible and ill follow the best i can. Also let me know if iv forgotten to give some info you might need to help me trouble shoot.

iv looked around the site for the last 4 days and found nothing, so im sorry if someone else has the answers on another post already.

Thanks in advance

Here is some of the stats from the ignitor.... as you can see my testing method must be screwed or
something or they somehow work way outta wack and than just quit? i dunno its getting frustrating lol

anyways hope this image works. BTW if your wondering about title, the ignitor is from a 1981 kz1000J, was there when i bought the bike.

HEY sorry everyone.

i got er workin again... that other thred just poped up and it was a god send lol think it was called one coil fires?

anyways i switched the signal wire (not 12v feed) and got spark so i switched out a coil that read exactly the same on my ohm meter but it fired up so i dunno what stat im missing on how to test a coil but that was the problem, guess i need a kawasaki electrotester or something lol

anyways thanks Patton and MFolks for your indirect help but is there any explanation for my odd readings on my IC Ignitor?

Just goes to show ohm tests on semiconductors are not very meaningful since it depends on what meter you use to take the reading. Ohm tests are for reading resistance on passive, linear devices. Active, or non-linear devices, such as igniters will give different reading with different meters.

As you said, you would need the Kawasaki test meter, or some meter very similar to it, to get the appropriate reading, and hopefully the igniter manufacturer didn't change it's design during the production run.
