My Green coils showed up today. They look good and measure out properly. My last question is, how long do you think coils are designed to last? I noticed they have a manufacture date of 3/89. Just curious if I am going to be replacing these soon in the future....

Expansion and contraction from heat cycles eventually degrade the insulation and case plastic. It also creates cracks that allow moisture in. If the coils have never been used, they should be good as new.

15 years of regular use will start to degrade the coils to the point where their reliability can come into question. After 20 or 25 years, I wouldn't want to take any long trips without replacing the coils.

Don't know how much they have been used, but were used. There appear to be no cracks, so I guess in the end it doesn't matter anyway. Will slap them in and let it go for now. If there are signs of ignition misfire and spark dropping out, I'll deal with it when the time comes.

As a final FYI on this topic. Spoke with a technical support person at Dyna and he has a Suzuki GS1100 that he bought from the original owner in '82. It had Green Coils that were manufactured in the late 70's. He is still running those coils on his hot street engine he built for the bike about 8 years ago. His take is, if the primary resistance is good, they are good to go and he wouldn't worry at all about running them 10, 20 years more.

FWIW...
