Dyna S Ignition Coil Compatability
12 Jan 2013 23:50
All,
Looking for the answer to two questions:
1. Which of the Dyna coils can I use with my Dyna S ignition on my KZ900?
2. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to running the Blue (.7 Ohms) Dyna coils on a street bike?
Any help would be appreciated.

So the only coils that are compatible are 3.0 Ohm Green Coils or Stock Coils. Got it, and thanks. Wish the Dyna S literature made that statement.

The literature, or the website, should say that somewhere that 3.0 ohms is the lower limit for coil resistance. Anything higher is fine.

Well they say the Dyna S is a drop in replacement for the stock points plate, so I would think that they work with stock coils. In addition, I can't find anything in the Dyna literature that says I have to use 3.0 Ohm coils, but I agree I think I have to. The funny part is, at Z1 Enterprises they sell the 3.0 Ohms Mini Dyna coils, but it SPECIFICALLY states they are not to be used with the Dyna S ignition as you will burn them out. Interesting. Either way, I'll order up a set of green coils.

Call Dyna and ask....then you know its right....this subject has come up 100 times and Dynateks old web site said 3.0.....but they could have changed the Dyna-S to work stock.....I would just ring them to see since new coils are $160
Good luck....report back....

I did just find this statement I happen to read over in the Dyna S installation instructions: "It was designed for use with stock, or other coils, or combination of coils that have at least THREE OHMS of primary resistance."
In addition, the whole mini coil thing appears to be due to dwell control compared to a standard wound coil. You need an ignition with separate dwell control to prevent them from operating improperly.

If you look down the list to dyna-s it says 3.0

DYNA S (non-Harley):
Recommended - DC1-1. Use coil with 3.0 ohms primary resistance

Stock electronic ignition from Kawasaki uses 2.3-ohm coils, which are too low for the Dyna S.
The stock, points coils are 4.0 ohm, which work fine with the Dyna S.
Page one of the instructions:
You can't use the mini coils on ignitions with fixed dwell. They require ignitions with variable dwell angle so the coils don't overheat.
