It should be on either the left or right handlebar switch pod. I know high and low beam is controlled by the left switch pod on the 80's bikes. Do you have a wiring diagram? It should show the handlebar switch pods and their functions.

My memory probably aint what it used to be, but I seem to remember that the feds outlawed the on-off switch in 70 or 71.

The manaul I have says that there is a switch on the right handlebar. I don't see it. I think I have a bigger problem. I took the gas tank off on Friday to check something on the carbs. When I put the tank back on and turned the key on, the headlight did not come on. I tried to start the bike and it will turn over, but will not start. I checked the coils and they both have battery power to them. I have spark at all 4 plugs. I checked the wiring that the tank normally covers and did not see any broken or any wires that had been nicked. They both started after putting the tank back on. What else needs to have power before the bike will start ? Any help is appreciated.

The headlight switch (if like my 1977 KZ650) should be on the right handlebar control just above the starter button. Ed

If It is a 76 KZ900. Originally it had an on and off switch.
Somewhere down the line, the switch housing was switched out with a 77-78-79 switch block.
The case was the same, they just did not put the knob in, they blocked it off with a liitle black piece. Here is a picture of 2 similar.

You need 3 things for the bike to run: spark, fuel and compression. If you have spark, check the other things.

You said you removed the Tank to do something to the carbs. What what was that? What was the original problem? Are the carbs getting fuel from the petcock, is it flowing when turned to "Prime"?
Head light and not running are probably not related if you Do have good spark. Check your fuel supply, hose connections etc.

The bike was running when I took the gas tank off. The #1 carb was leaking fuel. When I put the tank back on and tried starting the bike, the main fuse blew. I replaced the fuse and tried it again and the fuse blew again. I took the tank off and checked for exposed or broken wires, but did not find any. Put the tank back on and the fuse does not blow anymore, but the bike wont start either. That is when I noticed that the head light was no longer working. I will check to see if fuel is getting to the filter tomorrow.

So the Main fuse, and the spark, does it have spark with the tank in place bolted tight? Or was it removed, and main fuse good when you checked?
Sounds like you have pinched a wire for the Main to Blow. Check carefully where the tank slips into the two front rubber mounts, as the harness will be right close there. It could have sliced into the insulation, or you may have just got it pinched.
Maybe Edit the tittle of your post, or start another for No Start/ Blowing main fuse.

Re: Not Starting
22 Dec 2012 18:09
The bike was running when I took the tank off. I adjusted the float on the #1 carb and put the tank back on. The bike turns over, but will not start. I took the tank back off today and fuel is getting through the filter to the carbs. It just seems strange that the bike will now not start and the head light will not come on. I checked the light itself and it is good. I have spark and fuel and since the bike was running before taking the tank off, it has compression. I checked the wiring under the tank and dont see any wires disconnected or pinched. I just trying to figure out what is causing it not to start.
