Or you could also just run a separate wire from the on side of ignition switch to the headlight

Maybe a hidden head-light switch is the simple answer.

bountyhunter wrote: Yes, you are right it's really hard on the battery. My '79 KZ750 would eat a battery about every 18 months starting with lights on, and now the batteries last 5 - 6 years.
There is a simple mod:
Down by the fuse box, you can add a relay for each "main branch" of electricity thet opens when the starter relay is activated. Just be sure to insert then after the point where power to the ignition is so the ignition stays hot.
On mine it was really easy: main power from the battery came in through a 20A fuse then went off three ways: to the ignition switch and coil, and two other branches each fused at 8A apiece. One fed the headlight and some dashboard lights, the other fed tail, brake, turn sigs, horn, etc. I installed a relay in front of each 8A branch line to cut them off when the starter relay activates.

Here is a part of a Japanese wiring diagram a friend gave me..
Would you say this is what BountyHunter is referring to.
This was in a separate box on the drawing linking to the head-lamp.
I note there are two relays.... They may exist and not connected

I will have to play with this scan ... doesn't seem to be working?

Well heres a simple relay, one of you techno types can explain how to wire it.
I know how,Im just not good at x-plaining the techno stuff! :woohoo:
Without having the actual relay sitting in front of me Im gonna say youd run the wire from starter button to 86 then go from 85 to the solenoid.
Then run the power wire feeding the headlight switch to 87a then continue with another wire from 30 to the headlight switch to complete the circuit.
When you hit the starter button it will energize 86/85 which will then drop 87a/30 out of circuit till you release starter button

If you can get that Japanese picture up (my post above) you will see they used two relays!

This relay atleast serves a purpose other than being a band aid,if the relay ever goes bad it too can leave you stranded or without lights though.
But other than adding a switch or changing to earlier bar controls this is easiest option I know of
