Battery draining too fast?
26 Nov 2012 22:06
I just bought an 82 kz750 ltd and I'm curious on the battery. It was having trouble starting the other day and I was trying to start it for about 5 minutes maximum before it wouldn't make anymore noise to start because the battery was dead. I had to charge it back up before i could try to start it again. Is this normal for a full battery to drain that quick while trying to start my bike? I have it hooked up to a battery tender as of now for the winter. I checked the water inside and it looks high enough. I'm new on batteries so i wanted to make sure what was going on before I go and buy a new one for nothing. Thanks, Dylan.

Would remove battery, add distilled water as might be needed to bring levels within specs, charge overnight at 2 amps maximum, and then have the battery load-tested at Auto-Zone, Walmart, or other auto parts dealer.

You'd be very lucky to get 5 years out of a motorcycle battery, they live in an environment of vibration, heat, and imperfect charging systems. If it were me, I'd have it load tested at least once a year.

Are you sure your bike is charging the battery?
charge the battery then, take a voltage reading with a multimeter
with the bike running, take another voltage reading.
If it is the same for both readings with the voltage dropping, you may have a bad regulator rectifier or stator coil.
If the reading is higher and fluctuating with the bike running, then you most likely have a bad battery.
