Stumped! Wiring Issue 82 KZ750 csr.. was created by tjgonz
Hi I recently tore down my kz & labeled all wiring.
Well finally finished her & went to wire her up this morning..failed horribly.
First off I basically have two connections that seem to have no place & can go together but I have them labeled differently. No match for either wire & I ran them together just to double check & they started smoking & regulator heated up pretty good. One wire is off of the stator I believe, it is black & yellow & comes off the clip of a braided bundle from the side cover near the chain with two other yellow wires. The other is black & yellow and is just somewhere in the middle of the harness. Without these connected I got lights & key ignition working but my starter just clicked when push start button was pressed. Couldnt find a diagram for my exact bike. Any help please before I go crazy here. Thanks guys!

If you are still having issues, wires not connected properly, post up some decent photos of the wire etc.
Also if your wires got hot, and the R/R started to smoke, it is probably shot. The wires also may need to be replaced/ repaired. When they get hot, the insulation gets compromised, causing shorts to other wires or ground.

Thanks for the help guys..Im so frustrated.
Ive figured out my problems are ground wires.
Does anyone know if I need a ground wire to the frame or does ground from engint to battery ground everything? Wiring is not my specialty but may need to redo my harness myself because a shop is just not an option. Thanks!

The battery is normally connected from the Negative(-) terminal to an engine mounting bolt. It should be at least 8 AWG (American Wire Gauge) in size. If the cable is too small, the Negative power will attempt to use any other ground wires to return to the battery, making the wires smoke, and making you think of an electrical short.
The Positive(+) terminal on the battery usually goes to the starter solenoid, using one of the terminals as a common point for power distribution. Again, it will be about 8 AWG in size. From the starter solenoid, another cable will go to the starter motor, providing current to make it work, when you push the start button on the right handlebar switch.

All battery cables must be clean and tight for maximum current flow, and the other Black with Yellow striped wires must have a good ground connection. If the various grounding places on the frame are corroded or rust filled, an M6 X 1 tap should be able to remove the rust for improved ground connection.

Thanks MFolks, great advice. I found out I had some connections reversed on my electronics. I did get my lights all working & my starter solenoid clicks but nothing more, appears to be no spark on kickstart..
Now I still have the blk/ylw ground from voltage reg clip with no home. When I ground it to the female blk/ylw ground it shorts. So I assume my regulator is not grounded, bike wont start, correct? BTW I have no grounds on my frame, only negative battery to engine case.

Go back to the wiring diagram Patton posted, and look at this
This shows where your Ground wire should be bolted to the frame.

Sweet! I wasnt too sure, my bike has no side covers or anything like that pretty much is bare minimal, wish I took notes of where it was grounded. So I think my next step will be opening the harness & checking the ground then bolting to frame somewhere. Thanks again Motor Head!
