I now have NO SPARK! was created by badrhino
I replaced a coil with a used one and now I am not getting any spark from any cylinder on the engine. I have tested for voltage to my coils and it is good. I have also tested voltage to the igniter and it is getting juice.

What else could be wrong? Everything worked (marginally) before I replaced the coil.

P.S. It sucks working on this bike as it has the 82 J motor and the electrical looks to be mostly original for the 80 LTD.

Do you have a multimeter ? If so then set it on ohms, stick one lead in one plug cap and the other lead in the other plug cap and see if you have continuity i.e a reading, a circuit, resistance.

"what else could be wrong?" bad used coil, bad plug cap, bad leads.

I tested the coils and wires before installing and everything was good. I had the bike running a week ago. Put in the coil right side coil and hooked everything back up and now I'm not getting any spark to any wire. That's why I'm wondering if it isn't the igniter or the pick-up coils. But they all worked last week.

What is the Primary winding resistance of your Used replacement coils? That's the small wires, measured with an Ohm meter. If incorrect for the ignitor, it could have smoked it.
2.2 Ohm, 3.0 Ohm, should be OK. 5.0 is for points, but shouldn't cause a failure of the ignitor, 1.something is trouble.
Trouble shooting, including ignitor testing is in the service manual. The one in my signature will have the tests.

For some reason my cheapo multi-meter is no longer working. I tried replacing the batts and it still show nothing on the voltage side or on some of the ohm settings. Must have blown it up. lol
I will have to go borrow one to check everything again. The closest Harbor Freight is 1 1/2 hrs. away so I can't buy any cheap ones around here.

I am still not getting anything. I bought a new meter so I can restart my quest.

I have tested the coils and they were 2.0 and 2.2 ohms
I tested the secondary wires and they are both roughly 20,000 ohms

Now I need someone to explain to me exactly how to test the igniter and anything else I might need to check. I unplugged the connector to the igniter. I have attached a picture for reference. What connections get checked for what and how much/many (ohms) am I looking for?

I have a manual for the J model but it is confusing to say the least.

Point ignition coils and electronic ignition coils are two different beasts. Make sure your using the right ones for the right igniter.

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.

The bike was running before I switched out a coil. Now I am getting nothing. It is a J motor with an factory electronic ignition. I have the same coil part number just newer ones that have the twist on caps that can be replace with new wires.

Ahh, ok.Check your trigger wiring and ohm them, if thats not t, I'd suspect the ignitor. Chance or 2 triggers or 2 coils being bad is very slim.

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.

Usually there is one or more wires going to the ignitor that will be hot wires, make sure at leat one wire is hot going to it.....thinking outloud,brain storming.

The Service Manual has all of the tests for you, this is from the one in my signature.
