Non Sealed Battery To Sealed Battery
04 Sep 2012 18:58 - 04 Sep 2012 18:59
I found the hard way about Non Sealed Batteries....They have a purpose but also tear shit up. It was spiting all over the place, the drain line had come off.
I would like to replace mine with a sealed battery. I ask the fourm for their thoughts on a quality battery....would like a med to high CCA batt.
Thanks, Spencer

I am running the 8 cell from ballisticparts.com and it works pretty good(stock 900). The battery has plenty of umph, whips it over real good, but lacks in longevity. I mean to say, if your trying to start a bike that don't wanna start, your only gonna get about 30 seconds of cranking. That said, it charges real fast, and works good otherwise, I would just go with the 12 cell given the chance again. Also, the thing is tiny, roughly 2w x 5l x 4h, please forgive me, very rough numbers, working from memory, but the 12 cell will definitly fit in the stock location. Also make sure you get that acid cleaned up, I had mine ruin a set of pipes (etched the Chrome).
Mine:
04 Honda rebel 250(wifes)
04 GSXR 750(bolt on galore)
98 CBR 600F3(filter, pipe, adjustable cam sprokets, dyno tune)
76 KZ900A (LTD gauge pods, crash bars, LTD(style)pipes, dyna coils and ignition, headwork and mild port cleanup by cavanaugh racing, K&N filter pods, heck I dunno.

With the wet battery causing your corrosion. Make sure your charging system is not Overcharging/ boiling the battery etc. The new battery won't care for it much if it is.

Re: Non Sealed Battery To Sealed Battery
04 Sep 2012 23:43 - 04 Sep 2012 23:50Correct. The only way a wet cell will spit acid is either:Motor Head wrote: With the wet battery causing your corrosion. Make sure your charging system is not Overcharging/ boiling the battery etc. The new battery won't care for it much if it is.
1) it was overfilled
2) It was overcharged
And the word "sealed" is a bit of an illusion: all rechargeable batteries I know of have vents that open when they are overcharged (which builds up pressure inside). Without said vents they would blow up like an IED. Some sealed lead-acid batteries have a gelled electrolyte as opposed to liquid and they can be mounted at any angle. HOWEVER: many so-called "sealed" batteries have liquid electrolyte and cannot.

Re: Non Sealed Battery To Sealed Battery
04 Sep 2012 23:52Don't know but it's really easy to test: rev engine to about 3K and measure battery voltage: should be 14V +/- 0.5V. Higher than that and the reg is not working.4TheKZ1000 wrote: ok, I did purchase a combo unit rect / reg from Z1-E. Have these caused any probs that we know about....?

I have Scorpion batteries from Batterystuff.com in both my bikes. No complaints, $58.00 shipped.

I meant to order one of those Scorpion batteries from a guy in Oregon. He was pretty cool to deal with and I've only heard good things about the batteries. If I remember right, they were slightly smaller than stock too.

I just checked the battery charge. It came out at 13.7 volts ....I set the multimeter at VDC-20 and put the black led on the neg batt post and red on the poss post....rev the bike to 3000 rpm and took the reading....really dont think its the regulator...thats well within the range....?
