2001 KZ1000P NEW PROJECT
02 Sep 2012 20:59
Ok so here's the story. About a month ago I traded a American Classic 1911 and a Sigma .40 cal for this bike. When I got it I was told it was running before he started taking it apart to make it a bobber. After getting it home I noticed that he chopped the hell out of the wiring harness, so I got to work. So far I've ended up hard wiring all of the components to the wiring harness. I don't know if this was a bad thing or not lol but it's done anyway. I was about ready to start the bike when I saw a set of wires going into sprocket cover (Green w/ white line and I believe orange) so I popped the cover off and they look like it got cut somehow.
Does anyone know what these go to??
also here's a couple pics of the project thus far.

This may help:

If the wires are behind the sprocket cover, they may be for the neutral switch, oil pressure switch,or side stand switch. The alternator wiring should be three (3) yellow wires going from the rubber grommet on the alternator cover.

2nd pic on left is your clutch switch, makes sure clutch is pulled before it can crank
3rd pic down on left looks like the fairing electrical plug
4th looks like a flasher relay possibly, book will tell you.
The rest you'll prob have to hunt down with a manual. Seems most of your color codes are still there.

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.

Yea see I thought it went to the alternator as well but the wire colors don't show up anywhere on the diagram. I know it's not the oil pressure switch because that's located right below the carbs with a single wire but I'll check the neutral switch and side stands switch.

LOL Perfect I looked at a 90 side stand switch ion ebay and that's exactly the connector it has on it. Thanks MFolks and OldSchoolz for coming to the rescue.
Now just a question the bike would still start without this switch wouldn't it??

On the clutch switch, follow the wires where the plug into the harness, simply plug the 2 harness wires together to bypass the clutch switch. Remember though, if you have it in gear and forget and dont pull the clutch, it will crank and possible fall over (hence the need for a clutch switch)

So without the clutch switch in, the bike wont crank?? (All before I bypass it of-coarse)
That does make a lot of sense especially I tried to crack it last night just to check my progress and got nothing lol :woohoo:

Yep, it's a safety device to prevent cranking while in gear, so keep that in mind if you bypass it.
The small switch is usually built into the clutch mount(perch), so a plunger pops out when the clutch lever is squeezed, letting the starter circuit work.

So would it be the same for the side stand switch?? If I connect the two wires, instead of connecting them to the switch itself, would the bike still manage to run ok??

So I finally got the starter to start working. I somehow managed to hook up the siren switch instead of the starter button. Still no start but I have a feeling it's just the plugs and wires but I will keep everyone updated. Once shes started then the real work comes into play.
