starter problem

i have a 77 kz650c and when it is cold or bike hasnt been started for a day or two, and i go to start with electric start it makes a clanking noise and does till is started but when bike is warm it starts right up with lttle clanking any ideas wht the problem is??????

I would pull off the side cover and look at the chain, and gears. Could be a worn chain, or guide.

Which chain? KZ650 starters use a starter clutch mechanism that is known to make noise when it gets some wear on it and slips. Ed

If you can positively identify that the noise is coming from the starter clutch you may want to replace the appropriate pieces. Take a look at the links in the posting below for info on how to do it:

Sooo, is it suggestive of a failing starter clutch if when using the electric start, is does not always engage fully, and at other times makes a sound something like a Transformer with a smokers cough?

If so, then:

A) Damnit. Just put in fresh oil and want to go riding after a very difficult spring maintenance session.
B) Thank you Ma Kaw for the kickstart.
