left coil wont fire!! was created by Rev
Just cleaned and set up carbs, replaced damaged coil and new plugs. started right up but only on 1&4. Check to see that the dyna s was working properly, didn't have a ohms meter to check coil so I replaced it with a known working dyna coil, but still would not fire. Is there something else I should look at?

I'd check with Dyna, and see if the warranty covers your unit. To me, It sounds like a pick up coil has failed, either due to heat, or vibration.

Checked the resistor inside the sparkplug cap? It should test to 5000 ohms.

Would assure that voltage being received at the coil primary terminal matches the battery voltage as measured across the battery posts.

Might be a defect in the spark plug cap, or defect in a connection between cap and plug wire.

Good Fortune! :)

Using NGK plugs? I've had some fail either right out of the box, or sometime later, making troubleshooting a real head scratcher. I've changed to Denso W24-ESU in my bike.

I have replaced the first coil which was new, with another coil that I knew was good. I think I will switch the 1&4 plugs around with the 2&3 plugs and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks

Dyna-S coil has screws that attach wires to the primary terminals.

The stock mounting spacers are typically used when installing the coils.

The head of the screws sometimes comes dangerously close to the coil mounting spacers, and may short against the spacer.

Would assure that there's sufficient clearance between the heads of the screws and the mounting spacers.
Or insulate them from each other.

Good Fortune! :)

Just switched 2&3 plugs with 1&4 and 1 & 4 fired up but not 2&3 so the plugs are not the issue. I guess I will have to wait until I bring my muti meter home.

Thanks Patton, I have bypassed this problem by using zapstraps on the terminal side, and the standard attachment bolt on the other side.

Would also ohm-check coil's (1) primary winding, and (2) secondary winding, measuring resistance between clips inside the plug caps.

If there's a break in conductivity somewhere within the secondary loop, it typically results in loss of spark at both plugs.

Sometimes it helps to remove the cap and snip the plug wire ΒΌ" to gain a better connection with the cap.

And sometimes a cap is found defective.

Did you perform the Dyna Static Alignment/Tests (12Vdc lamp tester)...?
Dyna rotor Magnet on the correct orientation (TDC 1/4, should be pointed left)...?

Here's some issues/things I encountered, possibly help you out...
