So I have been doing some searching around and found that the Dyna S Ignition system is probably the best way to go for my bike. Just want to know if there is anything I should watch out for. I am looking for a reliable route and i really don't want to have to mess with the timing... so what am wondering is.... Do I need the Coils and the points or just the points replacement part?

I just installed the Dyna S with 30 year old Andrews coils I'm not sure what the ohm rating on your present coils are but the Dyna reccommends 3 ohm coils so if yours are 2.2 ohm I would replace them.

But then again I am gonna replace mine as soon as the financial situations allows for it new couils new wires and new ignition should be set it and forget it!

I installed a Dyna S and Dyna 3.0 ohm coils (the green ones) awhile back, absolutely no complaints!

X2 Converted my 650 and 900 from points to the Dyna S and green coils. I can't believe it took me 25 years to see the light. As far as timing once it is set you are done, set it and forget it.

The stock coils are a match for the Dyna-S electronic ignition.
Provided the stock coils are still in serviceable condition.

However, a typical problem arises because of the old hard cracked spark plug wires that are permanently built into the stock coil as integral components of the coil.

If wanting to add new plug wires to an old stock coil, a plug wire "splicer" is available whereby new wires may be attached to the short stub ends of the old wires.
Imo, the money would be better applied toward new Dyna coils.

Won't hurt anything to try running the old coils (and built-in wires) along with the Dyna-S ignition.
Watch for high intensity voltage leaks through the plug wires, and possible cracks in the old coils.

Good Fortune! :)

I've had mine for 3 years or so now with zero issues. I installed the ignition, coils and wires, I think that's the best way to go. What to watch out for? Just make sure you wire it up properly and lube the advancer periodically. Easy peasy.
