Anyone recognize this ignition?
16 Apr 2012 15:38
It was a working pull of a '81 kz650 and I'd like it to go on my '77 kz650. I asked one mechanic to install it and he said "you got the wrong one." Looking at the new points he installed it seems like he stripped the screw above the timing marker window and said "Screw it." I guess I'm wondering if anyone's seen this before. The only markings say TEC and Japan. I've done lots of searches and come up with nothing. I'm hoping it's a Dyna S-type ignition and not one that requires a computer black box that I don't have. Anyone know anything about these?

It looks like the OEM Kawasaki electric igniter to me. They came stock on the 81 and later kz650s.

Hmm, sounds like I need an ignitor box then. Hmm, that project might have to wait a little while. I saw searching the forums that someone put a stock 80's electrical ignition on '78 bike, Hopefully it'd be compatible with a '77 B1 also.

Yes, what you have there is the pick ups (replaces the points) and the mechanical advancer with cam, from a late model 650 or a 750 4 cylinder.
You will need an IC Igniter too.
Ones off '79 to '82 (approx) kz 550, 650, 750 and even the kz1000s should work.
Here are some:
motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_t...z+IC+Igniter&_sacat=
Not the '84 model though, or the Police IC Igniter or the '82 750 twin.
Here's a swap I did some years back from points to factory electronic igniton, first with a pick up plate off a KZ1000, then later with a late model KZ650's:

If you can't find the igniter box, you can make one pretty cheaply. The link is in my signature: HEI.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationJust grabbed this guy:
from a '81 Kawasaki KZ750. With a little luck it'll be here by the weekend and on the bike before Monday! Now I just gotta drill/remove the stuck/stripped screws holding the points in there.
Thanks for the tip on the '81 manuals!

Just an update. I got the igniter, wired everything up and no spark. After some poking around I discovered that while the battery was at 13.5v I was only getting 10.3 or so at the plugs. I did up the wg coil wiring mod and success! Everything worked and all of it wasn't too difficult. No I just have to pretty it up, clean my carbs, and paint my tank.
