If by diode, you mean the one shown in the above diagram just next to the 'turn signal relay', then no it is not necessary.

gwolever, what LEDs did you end up using? Flasher realy?

I just wired in a Tridon EP35 into my '78 KZ1000 and it works great.THANKS OMR :woohoo:
Much better signal current with the electronic flasher. Still using incandescent at the moment. Not sure it is compatible with LEDS yet. Trying to make a decision on which LEDs to get.
SuperbriteLEDs keeps coming up in the LED discussions. May go with them.
